To advance its educational mission, Carnegie Mellon University is committed to creating and maintaining a learning and work environment that fosters creativity, growth, emotional and physical wellbeing and the pursuit of scientific, academic and artistic excellence. The willingness and ability of individuals in this community to form close, professional relationships is critical to the success of this commitment. They also encourage the reasonable perception of placing others who do not engage in similar intimate relations at a disadvantage or the reasonable perception that the University condones the unfair and potentially exploitative exercise of professional authority and institutional influence. The validity of consent depends on, among other things, it being voluntary free from manipulation, coercion, or undue influence. Intimate relationships of unequal power, authority or influence can undermine the validity of consent. Moreover, even when consent is freely given at the outset, consent can be withdrawn at any time. Because ending intimate relations between individuals involved in professional relationships can involve actual or perceived consequences in the workplace, educational environment or the professional realm, the threat of such consequences can lead to the perception that at some point the intimate relationship was no longer consensual. Such intimate relations pose risks to the parties to the relationship, other members of the community, the educational program, and the University, including but not limited to claims of sexual harassment including hostile environment claims and quid pro quo claims , sexual assault, related civil or criminal claims, and reputational risk to all involved. The purpose of this policy is to assure healthy professional relationships. This policy is not intended to discourage consensual intimate relationships unless there is a conflicting professional relationship in which one party has authority over the other as described below.
Long-time reader, first-time writer, etc. I have a question that does not appear to be covered by your existing advice about asking guys out. I am currently a student grad, not college, if that makes any difference and I have a crush on my TA. What do I do? Even if I like people a lot and think they are talented, not everyone gets invited to play in my social sandbox.

HR contacts. Employee Relations contacts. Purdue University is committed to maintaining an environment in which learning, discovery and engagement take place in a professional atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. Amorous Relationships can develop within the University community between faculty, students and staff. The disparity of power when an Amorous Relationship is between 1 a student and a faculty member, graduate teaching or research assistant, or any other University employee who has educational responsibility over the student, 2 a supervisor and subordinate, or 3 senior and junior colleagues in the same department or unit makes the individuals involved susceptible to exploitation.
Relationships between faculty and students are particularly susceptible to exploitation. The respect and trust accorded a member of the faculty by a student, as well as the power exercised by faculty in giving grades, approvals or recommendations for future study and employment, make voluntary consent by the student suspect. Those who abuse their power in the context of an Amorous Relationship where there is Educational or Employment Supervision and Evaluation violate their duty to the University community.
Voluntary consent by the student or subordinate in a romantic or sexual relationship is difficult to determine given the asymmetric nature of the power structure in the relationship. Because of the complex and subtle effects of the power differential in the relationship, the individual with power may perceive the existence of consent that may not exist or not exist at the level perceived by the individual with power. The possibility exists that, if the relationship sours, these individuals may be subject to a claim of sexual harassment.
Amorous Relationships may have an effect on others in the course, department or unit. Others may perceive that the student or subordinate in the Amorous Relationship is favored and afforded undue access and advantage above others in the same course, department or unit. Therefore, Purdue University prohibits Amorous Relationships between a student and any University employee who has educational responsibility over the student, and supervisors and subordinates where there is a supervisory or evaluative relationship between the parties.

The Gazette article ‘So you want to date a teaching assistant’ has been criticized by the University of Western Ontario’s administration and TAs for being sexist and disrespectful. Western University’s daily student newspaper has apologized for publishing a “how-to” guide on dating teaching assistants, which suggests Facebook stalking as a way of getting close to school staff. In a statement issued Wednesday, The Gazette ‘s editorial board apologized for the article , which appeared in its Aug.
The article, titled “So you want to date a teaching assistant,” listed a series of tips for students interested in dating their teaching assistants. It suggests that students “Facebook stalk” their TA and express their flirtatious side by being “liberal with those top buttons on your blouse or button-up shirt. The article drew criticism from University staff, including TA’s, who deemed it sexist and disrespectful.
The editorial board said Wednesday that the article appeared to promote “excessive drinking, drug use and sexual advances” on TAs. We regret this mistake, and we look forward to reporting on these issues in a more serious manner in the future,” the board said. As a result of the backlash, the paper said it will not distribute the Frosh issue during the school’s orientation week, and will carry out a full retraction.
